API Study Abroad and Intern Abroad Scholarships
API awards approximately $500,000 in study abroad scholarships annually ranging from $250 -$1,000 per student. To maximize the number of students who benefit from API scholarships, API awards a maximum of $1,000 per student. As such, students who may be eligible for multiple sources of funds from API (e.g., an affiliate scholarship and a Gilman matching award) are advised that the total contribution from API cannot exceed $1,000. Participants may apply for multiple API scholarships (though may only be awarded one) and are encouraged to refer to the list of additional scholarship and funding resources included below. Participants on intensive month, work/teach/volunteer, customized, or faculty-led programs are not eligible for API scholarships.

Deadlines for the API scholarships are as follows:
- FALL/YEAR: June 10
- SPRING SEMESTER / WINTER QUARTER PROGRAMS: October 15
- SPRING QUARTER: December 15
- SUMMER: April 1
API Regional Scholarship
The API regional scholarships (Asia/Middle East, Europe, Latin America, and South Pacific) provide awards for API participants that range from $250 to $800 per session. All API students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is both need and merit-based. We will review your academic record, essays and financial need as stated in your own words. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer study abroad students
API First Generation Scholarship
API is pleased to support participants on our programs who are the first in their families to attend a college or university. The First Generation Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750 per session. In order to be eligible, students must meet the following requirements: have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher; be a first-generation college student (i.e., parents and grandparents did not attend a college or university); show financial need. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer study abroad students
API Community or Technical College Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to API participants who attend a community or technical college in the U.S., and awards range from $250 to $750 per session. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer study abroad students
API STEM Scholarship
The API STEM scholarship is offered for API participants who are studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The API STEM Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750. In order to be eligible, students must meet the following requirements: have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher; major in an area classified as a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics); show financial need. Special consideration will be given to students who are taking courses related to their major while abroad. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer study abroad students
API Student-Athlete Scholarship
It is not an easy task to juggle the demands of college athletics with academic responsibilities while pursuing other interests on campus. API supports both current and college-bound student-athletes participating in our programs. We welcome student-athletes across all divisions of the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA to apply. The API Student-Athlete Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer study abroad students
API DACA Scholarship
The API DACA scholarship is designated to provide financial assistance to an API participant who is the recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The scholarship awards $575 to an eligible participant to help offset the cost of applying for Advance Parole. We will take into consideration your academic record and essay detailing your financial circumstances, background, and motivation for studying abroad. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer students.
API Diversity Scholarship
API is proud to provide a diversity scholarship in order to support participants in our programs who hail from a variety of backgrounds. The API Diversity Scholarship award ranges from $250 to $750. In order to be eligible, students must be one or more of the following: a U.S. military veteran, a non-traditional student (30 years old or older), a student with a disability, a minority student, and/or a LGBTQ student. This scholarship is offered to quarter/semester, academic year, and summer study abroad students
API-JCU Diversity Scholarship
The API-JCU Diversity Scholarship provides one full tuition award per session abroad (fall, spring, summer 1 or summer 2 session) to an outstanding API minority student participating in the John Cabot University Program in Rome, Italy. In order to be eligible, students must meet the following requirements: accepted to API’s Direct Enrollment Program at John Cabot University in Rome; identify as black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/Asian-American, or Native American.
API-JCU Early Bird Scholarship
Students who are interested in studying abroad with API at John Cabot University in Rome have the opportunity to earn an “early bird scholarship” in the form of a $200 – $250 program fee deduction, simply by completing their API online application in advance of the application deadlines.
In order to qualify for this scholarship, students must submit their complete application to the API/JCU program according to the following schedule:
- Summer 1: On or before February 11 – $200 scholarship
- Summer 2: On or before February 11 – $200 scholarship
- Summer 1 & 2: On or before February 11 – $200 scholarship
- Fall: On or before February 25 – $250 scholarship
- Spring: On or before September 30 – $250 scholarship
Students who attend direct bill schools should speak to their study abroad office about how this scholarship may apply to them.
API-AUT University Scholarship
This scholarship is open to API students participating in our program at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand, and offers 2 deserving participants each semester a $500 award.
API-Massey University Scholarship
This scholarship is open to API students participating in our program at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand, and offers 4 deserving participants a NZ $1,000 award.
API-U. Auckland University Scholarship
This scholarship is open to API students participating in our program at the University of Auckland in Auckland, New Zealand, and offers 2 deserving participants each year a $500 award.
API-VUW University Scholarship
This scholarship is open to API students participating in our program at Victoria University of Wellington in Wellington, New Zealand, and offers 2 deserving participants each semester a $500 award.
API High School Scholarship
API is proud to award two $250 scholarships to participants on our summer high school programs. Applicants should submit one letter of recommendation, separate from the letter provided for the API program application, and a personal essay highlighting any financial need or other special circumstances and describing what they hope to achieve personally and academically during their session abroad.

API is proud to award two semester and two summer scholarships for $500 each to participants on our international internship programs

API-Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Awards
The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
Students participating in a semester or academic year study abroad program with API who have been awarded a Gilman scholarship will be eligible to receive up to $1,000 in matching contributions from API, or up to $500 in matching contributions from API for an intern abroad program during the summer, semester, or academic year. To receive this award, Gilman winners should indicate their scholarship details on their financial aid information after acceptance to an API study abroad program.

Boren Awards for International Study – Boren Scholarships allow U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests but underrepresented in study abroad.

BASAA – Boston Area Study Abroad Association – A scholarship awarded to a deserving student who attends a U.S. university/college located in Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Connecticut.
Cultural Bridge Scholarships – In accordance with their mission to facilitate life-changing international experiences, Weekend Student Adventures (WSA), a student travel organization, has created these scholarships to allow students the incredible, enriching opportunity to study abroad in Europe.

The GRIT (Globally Remarkable Intentional Talent) program is a year-long scholarship and leadership program for young adults (18-30 years old).
Hostelling International “Explore the World” Travel Scholarship – This is a particularly good option for participants on API’s teach, work, and volunteer programs!
ICDS Ambassadorial Scholarships:
Students traveling to ICDS during the Summer 2018 or Fall 2018 sessions are eligible for the ICDS Ambassadorial Scholarship. To receive the $300 summer scholarship or the $500-$750 fall scholarship (applied to your API program fee in both cases), simply email your API Program Coordinator and agree to assist in the generation of material for promotional purposes (photos, videos, testimonies, blog entries, etc.) during your time abroad and during the semester after the program ends.
The Jane Gluckman and Carol Rausch “Go Global” Scholarship This scholarship will be awarded to one student each year planning to study abroad in Mexico, Central America, South America, France, or Germany.
John Cabot University Summer Engineering Scholarships -JCU awards $500 per summer session to engineering majors who take an engineering course at JCU during a summer term.
LIV Fund – LIVFund was established in 2011 in order to recognize and proudly support study, internship and volunteer opportunities in Latin America.
Lord Acton Memorial Scholarship – Provides a deserving study abroad student with financial support to pursue academic study in the U.K.
Macquarie Student Representative Scholarship – Provides a tuition scholarship of AUD $1,000 for promotional assistance with the international program. Click here to learn about the API/Macquarie study abroad program.

Maynooth University Summer Scholarships – Maynooth University is offering summer school students the opportunity to win awards up to 500 Euros to help cover a portion of their expenses. Contact the API office for more information.
The George J. Mitchell Scholarships – Funds graduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland for one year.

Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation -Scholarships for undergraduate and graduate studies in Spain.
UAL Awards for Study Abroad – This scholarship rewards 4 outstanding semester students who have been accepted to the study abroad programs at University of the Arts London with awards of up to £1,500 each year.

Victoria University of Wellington / VUW Diversity in Study Abroad Scholarships – These scholarships are intended to encourage more students from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups to study abroad in Victoria for one or two terms, with four awards of up to $500 NZD each year.
Victoria University of Wellington / VUW IIE High Achiever Scholarship – These scholarships are to students applying to study abroad at Victoria University of Wellington with two awards of up to $1,000 NZD each term.

The 1800wheelchair scholarship awards two $500 scholarships each year. Scholarships are awarded to those attending a U.S. based institution. All applications are welcome.
Applicant must be enrolled full time in an undergraduate or graduate aschool, and have a documented disability. Applicant must be a US citizen or legal resident living in the US and enrolled in an accredited US University. Preference will be given to students majoring in public health, disability studies, disability research, health promotion or a field related to disability and health.
