Mendoza, located in western Argentina, is one of the most beautiful cities in South America. Nestled in the foothills of the majestic Andes, the site chosen for filming of the movie “Seven Years in Tibet,“ this vibrant city is home to over 1 million inhabitants. Travel within Argentina from Mendoza is facilitated by multiple plane, train and bus routes, and Santiago, Chile, is only an hour and a half away by plane. It is an ideal location for those who want to have easy access to outdoor activities and sports.
Mendoza was developed at the beginning of the twentieth century from an arid desert area. Its productivity is maintained through a series of interesting irrigation canals which run alongside the sidewalks (sometimes jokingly called “yanqui traps,” as tourists have been known to fall into them) invented during Inca times, which carry melted snow from the Andes throughout the region and into the city itself.
Mendoza’s excellent restaurants and night life, beautiful parks, and important cultural activities with both public and private universities, museums, a major symphony, and many art galleries create a welcoming alternative to the more hectic pace of Buenos Aires, and is the choice of many who want to enjoy the people-friendly atmosphere of a less overwhelming metropolitan setting. Skiers, mountaineers, bikers, rafters, trekkers and hikers will all feel right at home. Adventure tourism is a major industry in Mendoza, as is mountain rescue training. Mendoza is brimming with young European travelers looking to experience the beautiful Andes and all the opportunities for adventure that are available. Many youth hostels provide affordable and eclectic lodgings for young people.
Mendoza is at the center of Argentina’s wine industry and considered one of the seven wine capitals of the world with over 700 wineries or bodegas located near the town. Glamorous wine bars dot the city and the harvest, which takes place between February and April, is a major event. Since the 1990’s, wine tourism has become another sizable industry.
