API General Scholarship
Requirements
- The student must have applied and been accepted to summer, quarter, semester, or academic year API program (intensive two-week, three-week, month, and January term programs are ineligible).
- The student must obtain one additional letter of recommendation (in addition to the one required for the API application) from a professor or an assistant professor (for a total of 2 letters).
- The student must submit two essays:
- Now that you have chosen your study abroad destination with API, you are likely reading about the country you will soon be calling “home”. Research an aspect of your host country’s culture, history, society, or political structure that you find interesting and share your thoughts about it in a one-page essay. Consult at least two (2) separate sources, and be sure to cite them appropriately.
- A one-page personal essay stating the student’s goals for studying abroad, and any financial needs, financial aid status, or special circumstances about which the student would like API to know.
- The student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) or higher.
- Complete and return the scholarship application.

API/JCU Diversity Scholarship
The API/JCU Diversity Abroad Scholarship provides one full tuition scholarship per session abroad (Fall, Spring, Summer 1, Summer 2) to an outstanding minority student to encourage diversity at the John Cabot University campus in Rome, Italy.
Requirements
- The student must have applied and been accepted to an API JCU summer, semester, or academic year program.
- The student must obtain one additional letter of recommendation (in addition to the one required for the API application) from a professor or an assistant professor (for a total of 2 letters).
- The student must submit two essays:
- The United States is an ethnically and culturally diverse nation, which continues to value the role of diversity in society. Research Italy’s contemporary history and discuss an example of how diversity is viewed in Italian society. Feel free to compare and contrast American and Italian perceptions of diversity in your essay, being sure to consult at least two (2) separate sources and cite them appropriately.
- A one-page personal essay stating your goals for studying abroad, financial aid status and need, and/or special circumstances about which you would like API to know.
- Applicants must be students who are underrepresented minorities in study abroad (e.g., Black/African American; Hispanic/Latino; Native American; or Asian American).
- Complete and return the API/JCU scholarship application.

API/Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Awards
The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
Students participating on an API program who have been awarded a Gilman scholarship will be eligible to receive up to $1,000 in matching contributions from API. To receive this award, Gilman winners should indicate their scholarship details on their financial aid information after acceptance to an API study abroad program.

API/MatadorU New Media Scholarship
The API/MatadorU Scholarship provides one full tuition scholarship ($250 value) each session to complete an online course offered through the MatadorU New Media School. MatadorU is an online education center for the advancement of travel writers, photographers, and filmmakers. The scholarship recipient selected would elect to complete either a photography or a travel writing course. Requirements
To apply for a scholarship, each applicant must: Submit the following:
- API/MatadorU scholarship application.
- Write a brief essay (no more than one, double-spaced page please) explaining why you want to participate in the MatadorU program.
- Submit a favorite travel article or blog post that inspires you and explain in 200 words or less why you selected it.
- If you already have writing or video/photography experience, you are encouraged to submit an article, blog post, photo essay, or video. You may provide API with hard copies or provide URLs for your samples (school paper, blogs, Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, etc). Submit these materials by the scholarship deadline listed below. API encourages students to submit all materials together whenever possible. All materials must be received by API on or before the deadline for the applicant to be considered. Once received, API scholarship applications will be processed and applied in the following manner:
- Scholarships are awarded based on the student’s goals and demonstrated passion for the field of travel writing/photography.
- All applicants will be notified of scholarship decisions six weeks after the scholarship application deadline.
- Any student who withdraws from the API program will forfeit their scholarship award.
