You know you’re an API recruiter when…

By: Chelsea K., Central Regional Director, API Texas

(also former API France/Rome/Syracuse Program Manager, and former API student in Grenoble, France: French Language & Culture Semester Program)

You know you’re an API recruiter when…

  1. You’ve learned just how to position yourself in the aisle seat on the airplane to avoid the inevitable bumps, bruises, and items dropping on your head from above.
  2. You can fall asleep in almost any position on a plane. Examples: head on window, head on tray table, head on lap, head on arm until arm falls completely numb, head on neighbor, head on scratchy airline pillow propped up on window…
  3. You notice and thoroughly appreciate small acts of kindness. Examples: A plane erupting in applause after the pilot acknowledges a soldier on board, a couple patiently waiting for a man in the wrong seat to unzip every zipper and look through every pocket in his four pieces of carry-on luggage to verify that yes, he is in the wrong seat, and the boarding passes they clutch are (surprise!) not incorrect.
  4. Your new BFFs are your GPS (Google Maps and I have a tumultuous, yet ultimately satisfying relationship,) Subway (6 inch veggie on wheat, add jalapenos, not toasted,) Yelp.com (to avoid the monotony of 6 inch veggie on wheat, add jalapenos, not toasted,) Enterprise rental agents (even though, yes, they are all eager to get you on your way so they can head back to the Enterprise fraternity house.)
  5. You are accustomed to the feeling of waking up somewhere and yet having no idea where you are. You are accustomed to feeling the odd sense of being in an identical hotel room night after night but in a different city, a different state, a different place.
  6. You make a point to say “Thank You” and “Have A Nice Day” to the people that rarely hear it, working in service industries where clients rush in and out, in and out and deal with people at their unhappiest.
  7. After day 15 of 10 wrong turns, 400 emails, 3 traffic jams, 8 parking nightmares, and only a blurry memory of what your door code to your home apartment really is, you are still so excited to get up in the morning to share your study abroad story with one more student; to have the possibility of expanding someone’s world beyond the borders that they know; to empower someone that they CAN do it, they CAN go abroad, they CAN make their dreams come true, and they CAN change the course of their lives because YOU are a living example.

And that’s why you remain ever grateful, ever eager, ever excited to transform the student experience.

And that’s when you know you’re an API recruiter.
